An Easy Guide to Choosing Flooring in Every Room

It isn’t always easy to choose the ideal flooring for any room in your home, as new flooring is a big commitment and you won’t want to make the wrong choice. However, by considering a few key things about the room and the room’s function, finding the perfect floor is a lot easier.

How to Choose Flooring in Every Room

  • What Is the Room Used For?– When you’re choosing flooring for a room in your home, considering what the room is used for is key. This will have a big impact on the flooring options that will work well and those that won’t. For example, kitchens and bathrooms will require flooring that’s resistant to water and spills. However, a living room or bedroom will require flooring that’s softer and cosier.

  • Who Uses the Room?– It’s important to consider who uses the room, as this will influence the type of flooring that’s best suited. For example, rooms that are used a lot by children benefit from having flooring that’s durable, soft and easy to clean. Similarly, rooms that pets use often benefit from flooring that can withstand mud and is wipe clean.

  • What Is Your Budget?– There are a lot of different flooring options available and there’s something to suit every budget. Taking your budget into account is key, as it’s very easy to spend too much. Before choosing the floor, consider what you can afford and how much you’re willing to spend. Rather than paying more than necessary, find an affordable alternative.

  • How Is the Room Decorated?– It’s always worthwhile to take into account how the room is decorated, as some flooring options look better in certain rooms than others. For example, rooms that are light and minimal look great with a wooden floor. Taking the room’s decor into account will also help when it comes to choosing colour and pattern.

Save Money by Choosing an Independently Owned Flooring Company

When it comes to investing in a new floor, a lot of people immediately head to a large company in the hopes of saving money. After all, surely a large company can afford to offer the cheapest price? Though this does make sense in theory, it’s not often the case and this isn’t always the best way to do things. In fact, more often than not, choosing an independently owned flooring company is a cheaper and more affordable option.

An Independently Run Flooring Company Could Save You Money

With companies such as Carpet Right, Tapi and those that are similar advertising their services as being the cheapest on the market, it’s easy to see why a lot of people think it’s cheaper to visit them. However, this isn’t always true. Unfortunately, a lot of people don’t consider the possibility of independently run flooring companies being able to save them money.

Large, corporate companies are not able to offer the same price match guarantee that independently owned flooring companies are able to. Take Floorteck Flooring for example; as we are independently owned, we have a great deal of freedom when it comes to providing our customers with the very best price. If we’re told by a customer that they received a better price elsewhere, we can match ours within a matter of minutes. There’s never any worry of our customers paying more than they would do elsewhere. This level of flexibility isn’t always available at other companies. Simply, it isn’t up to the member of staff to make the decision. Luckily, at Floorteck Flooring, it is our decision.

Choosing Independently owned Flooring companies like Floorteck over the likes of Carpet Right and Tapi could save you a lot of money.

Why Choose Floorteck Flooring?

At Floorteck Flooring we offer a price match guarantee to all of our customers, which means you are guaranteed to pay the lowest possible price for your new floor. So, though your first thought may be to rush off to a large flooring company, take the time to consider an independently owned alternative.

Luxury Vinyl Tiles vs. Laminate Flooring

For a long time vinyl flooring got a hard time. In some ways it was justified, but what is less justified is giving it a hard time today. Vinyl has come a long way since it first took our floors by storm in the 1960s and beyond. The thing about vinyl flooring today is that it is very similar in look and price to laminates, which often makes it a challenge to choose between the two. In this article we’ll explore the pros and cons of each with a view to helping you make an informed choice.

How they’re made

Both luxury vinyl tiles and laminate flooring are man-made, but it’s how they’re made and what they’re made of is what makes them different. Vinyl tiles are made 100% of plastic and laminate is made of a mix of MDF and plastic.

The cost

Both options are low cost, which makes them very attractive if you’re doing a renovation or just fancy a new look in your home at low cost. While there are very cheap and slightly less cheap options, you’ll generally find that the total cost of each of these two solutions come in a whole lot lower than the likes of solid or engineered wood or ceramic tiles.

Durability

When you choose luxury vinyl or laminate for a busy household, you should always check with your supplier that the floor will stand up to the footfall you’re likely to experience. Laminate flooring helps you do this by having an AC Level score. Speak to the team at Floorteck if you would like to find out more about this.

Ease of fitting

While sheet vinyl can be a bit of a challenge for DIYers to manage, the advantage of luxury vinyl tiles is that they’re highly manageable and easy to lay. The same is true for laminate, which sometimes even comes with the underlay attached to the planks – making it twice as fast and easy to install.

Ease of care

When you select either of these flooring options, you know that you’re choosing a solution that will be easy to look after. It’s up to you whether you choose to run the vacuum cleaner over the floor prior to a light mopping or you prefer a soft broom. Either, together with a quick clean with a damp mop will keep your floor looking great.

Walk on experience

Generally speaking, some vinyl tiles are significantly thinner than most laminate. What this means is that when you fit even luxury vinyl tiles over a concrete floor, you are likely to experience a cold and hard feeling under foot. Even a lower cost laminate, which has thicker planks will generally give you a better, more enjoyable under foot experience.

Water resistance

Vinyl flooring is made of plastic. What this means is that it’s water-tight. Even if you submerge it in water, it won’t get damaged. This means that it’s the perfect solution for wet areas or areas that are susceptible to get wet in the home. Because laminate flooring has a core board that’s made of MDF, it will take in water at some point if water is left on its surface or allowed to go between the planks. What you must also be aware of is that the quality of joints and fitting will have a big impact on the water-tightness of either.

Flooring Ideas For Your Bedroom

When it comes to choosing a brand new floor for your bedroom, it isn’t always easy. With so many choices, the chances are you’ll find yourself stuck between a number of different options. However, there are some materials that stand out as working better in a bedroom than others.

Top Bedroom Flooring Ideas

  • Carpet – Carpet is one of the top bedroom flooring choices for many, simply because it’s extremely cosy. Whereas hardwood floors and laminate floors can be cold on a person’s feet in the winter, carpet is warm all year round. Plus, top quality carpets are soft and comfortable. Carpet is also a good choice for rooms that are prone to being cold, as it provides an additional layer of insulation.

  • Hardwood – Hardwood flooring is another popular bedroom flooring choice. Hardwood floor is traditional and luxurious, which radiates throughout the room. Though hardwood flooring isn’t as soft as carpet, it is a lot softer than tiles. To brighten up a hardwood floor or for a personal touch, add a rug.

  • Laminate – As hardwood flooring can be expensive, a lot of people choose to use laminate instead. Laminate flooring has a similar floor to hardwood flooring, but without the cost. Additionally, thanks to padding and insulation, there’s no reason as to why laminate flooring can’t be soft and warm to touch.

  • Vinyl – A lot of people don’t initially assume vinyl is a good choice for a bedroom, but it really is. As vinyl is available in a range of patterns and colours, it’s a fantastic way to create a more unique look. In fact, with vinyl it’s possible to create almost any look. Vinyl flooring is also extremely easy to clean, which makes it a popular choice for families and busy households.

How to Maintain Solid Wood Flooring?

The beauty and durability of solid wood floors make them one of the best choices a homeowner can make when it is time to decide on flooring. Yet hardwood floors can be damaged if care is not taken to protect them from environmental threats and daily wear and tear.

Hardwood floors do need plenty of care and attention, but the results are well worth it, as a floor that is properly looked after will stay in great condition for many years.

See below information on how to care for a lacquer finished or oil finished solid wood floor.

Keep your Hardwood Flooring Clean

The most common threat to your flooring is the dirt that can scratch and dull the surface. The solution here is regular cleaning with a broom and vacuuming. Besides protecting the floors of your home or business, regular cleaning also has the benefit of making the building far more inviting.

Keep your Solid Wood Flooring Dry

Water is a particularly potent threat to hardwood floors because it can cause warping, so spills should be cleaned up immediately.

Make sure you use only a slightly damp mop when mopping floors. It is also a good to keep mopping to a minimum. Instead, regular sweeping with a soft-bristled broom will keep a hardwood floor free of dirt that can scratch or dull floors if allowed to build up.

Protect your Hardwood Flooring from Furniture

Scratches and marks from furniture legs are some of the most prevalent threats to solid wood flooring. Fortunately, it is easy to guard against scuffs and scratches with felt furniture tips that are available at most home improvement stores. These tips are attached to furniture with a built-in, non-damaging adhesive, and they cushion the parts of the furniture that touch the wood floor directly.

Even with felt furniture tips, it is always best to lift furniture when moving it instead of dragging it across the floor, because although the tips will protect the floor, after a while they will become unstuck. Those who slide furniture without being aware that their tips are gone will find a big scratch left behind when they have finished moving the piece.

Area rugs are a common site in homes and businesses that have installed wood floors, but like furniture they can scratch the floor if they slide around too much. Therefore, it is always recommended that no-skid pads be used with the rugs. These rubber backings both protect the floors and prevent the rugs from sliding around and causing people to trip and fall.

Trimmed nails and Sensible Footwear

We all love our pets, but dog’s nails are yet another way that hardwood floors can be scratched. Keeping these nails trimmed is the best way to avoid the scratches that pets can leave behind.

Besides our pets, we can also damage the floors with our footwear. The most likely offender is a pair of high heels. Not wearing heels in the house is the best way to protect the floors.

Avoid Excessive Sunlight

Homeowners should beware the potential havoc that sunlight can wreak upon floors that are made of hardwood. Excessive sunlight can cause fading and discolouration, so care should be taken to make sure that no area of the wood floor receives too much direct sunlight.

Curtains and blinds are perhaps the most inexpensive way to minimise sun damage, but UV coating for the windows is another possibility when it comes to protecting your floors from harsh sunlight.

A mat can also help cover part of the floor that is heavily exposed. Also, if you do get an area of exposed wood fading, moving the mat around to ensure similar levels of sun elsewhere can help even out the colour, although the result will be a paler floor.

Stains on Hardwood

Hardwood can be stained by materials such as ink and wine. While dried stains may need sanding, a fresh spillage can be dealt with by quick cleaning. However, it is important that you do not clean a stain using too much water, as this can lead to the wood soaking up a lot of water and swelling. For the same reason, avoid allowing standing water to stay in place on the wood. Always mop it up quickly.

How to keep your carpet looking new

To keep your carpet looking new, make a smart selection when you purchase it and then follow some simple maintenance tips.

Quality carpet can continue looking new with routine care that keeps it soft and beautiful.

Soft and supple under foot
, carpet can be an exciting and excellent way to add design and luxury to your home, given its wide selection of colors, patterns and textures

Soils and stains don’t stand a chance if you research before buying and choose carpet that repels them! Stainmaster carpets use smart technology to create carpet fibers that resist liquids and actually make it more difficult for dirt to stick and penetrate fibers. These carpets also have built-in protection from static, so you’ll never have to spray on a temporary static solution. You’ll get all the beauty with an easy-care bonus!

Step 1: Regular care

Frequent vacuuming will help keep soil and debris from becoming embedded in carpet. Soil can pit and scratch carpet fibers, so regular vacuuming helps maintain that new look. High traffic areas should be vacuumed two to five times weekly. Light traffic areas may require twice weekly vacuuming, but don’t forget to go over non-traffic areas like corners once a week to keep dust from building up.

Use a vacuum with adjustable brushes that will suit the type of carpet and the area you are cleaning. Use a crevice tool to get into corners and a beater brush attachment when working on stairs. Regular vacuuming not only picks up dust, dirt and surface fragments on your carpet but will fluff up the fibers to counteract daily wear. Choose a vacuum setting to match the height of the carpet so it will clean efficiently without damaging fibers. Let your strokes overlap so you cover the entire carpet. Use the angled nozzle attachment to clean along baseboards where dust settles. Replace the vacuum bag or empty the canister when it is 2/3 full so your machine works safely and more efficiently, and periodically check the hoses and attachments for obstructions that might impair their function. You want to get the most clean with the smallest effort!

Step 2: Goodbye snags and dents

If sprouts or tufts — those snags that show above the carpet surface — appear, don’t pull them! Clip or cut them with scissors. You can remove a dent caused by furniture placement by dampening the area with a white rag, then heating the spot with a hair dryer as you “rake” the carpet with your fingers. Do not let the heat make direct contact with the carpet.

Step 3: Deal with spots and stains

Spots and stains are inevitable no matter how careful you are. Follow the manufacturer’s recommendations on cleaning, and never rub your carpet surface too hard as you can damage the twist of the fibers. Good maintenance is mandatory and will keep your carpet looking as beautiful as the day that it was installed!

Hallway Flooring Ideas

As the room that you’re greeted with upon entering your home, the hallway should provide a beautifully warm welcome for you and your guests – and you shouldn’t be afraid to use it to showcase your own personal style. After all, first impressions are everything! Here are a few fabulous hallway flooring ideas to get you started.

Hallways are the most well trodden path in any home, so regardless of whether you have a small hallway or a large vestibule that doubles as a separate room in it’s own right, it is worthwhile taking your time to consider your flooring options. It makes sense to go for something hardwearing, that is easy to clean and maintain and will stand the test of time no matter how many times you change the decor, so if you are looking for inspiration here are some of our best hallway flooring ideas.

First of all consider the age and style of your property. Traditional materials such as wood and tiles are ideal choices for a period home, while polished concrete or painted floors are better suited to more contemporary properties. Flagstones and old bricks look lovely in quaint country cottages, but for a more upmarket elegant feel a black and white chequerboard tile design is the perfect choice in a classic townhouse.

The colour of your choice of flooring is also important dependant on the size of your hallway. Dark polished wooden floors or deep red terracotta tiles will make a small hall appear smaller, while stripped lighter wood or neutral coloured tiles will help to enhance the feeling of space when combined with a white or cream decorating scheme.

Bear in mind that there are lots of different materials to choose from, so if you have set your heart on a wooden floor but need something that is easier to keep clean there are porcelain tiles available that mimic the effect of wooden planks in a variety of colours and finishes.

Polished wood flooring

Classic black and white chequered floors will never go out of style. This look works incredibly well in all sizes of hallway, from narrow rooms to large entrance halls, like this French-inspired hallway with chaise longue.

Pale parquet flooring

Develop a Scandinavian feel in your hall – complement light, airy spaces with pale blond parquet flooring. Slightly more unusual than floorboards, a parquet floor looks refreshingly modern in a clean, white room.

Emergency Christmas Carpet Cleaning Tips

Emergency Christmas and New Year Carpet Cleaning Home Remedies

From the accidental Christmas chocolates trodden into the carpet, to those clumsy red wine spills that happen on New Year’s Eve, we’ve got the best cleaning home remedies for ridding your carpets of the most common Christmas and New Year’s stains.

Christmas is the most wonderful time of the year, but for our carpets it’s a completely different story. From the accidental Christmas chocolates that are dropped and trodden into the carpet in the frenzy that is Christmas morning, to those clumsy red wine spills that happen on New Year’s Eve or even just the increase in foot traffic around the house. Chances are your carpets are going to experience some heavy use  over the holiday period.

For those unexpected spills where there isn’t a cleaner on hand and the shops aren’t open, we’ve got the best cleaning home remedies for ridding your carpets of the most common Christmas and New Year’s stains.

Cranberry Sauce

Sometimes our beloved favourites can escape the plate and end up on the carpet. However, your carpets needn’t suffer. For a simple home remedy all you’ll need is a tablespoon of hand dishwasher liquid mixed together with two cups of water. With a clean white cloth, simply wet cloth in the mixture and gently blot the stain until all the liquid is absorbed. Repeat until the stain has disappeared.

Red/Mulled Wine

Christmas is a time for celebration and many enjoy a glass of red wine, or even mulled wine since it is the season, but when our drinks end up hitting the carpet instead of our mouths it can be a bit less cheery. Not to worry though, we’ve got a cleaning hack that will help remove that stain as much as possible. Begin by grabbing a white dish cloth or paper towel and start blotting the carpet to remove as much of the wine as you can. After you’ve got out as much of the liquid as you can, pour a little bit of cold water onto the stain, this will help dilute the stain and make the blotting easier. Once it appears that no more wine will come up, create a baking soda paste by mixing a ratio of three to one water to baking soda ration and applying it to the area. After the paste has dried all you’ll need to do is vacuum the stain.

Chocolate
Chocolate treats are a tradition in many a household over the festive period, and one too many times carpets see their fair share of these goodies also. If you find yourself in this predicament over Christmas then there’s no need to worry. First, grab a butter knife and try and scrape the chocolate off the carpet. Once the chocolate has been removed apply a mixture of ¼ teaspoon of mild white detergent and one cup of room temperature water, then with a white cloth work your way from the outer edge of the stain to the middle, blotting not rubbing.

Beer

If beer is more your beverage of choice over the holiday period, we’ve got a cleaning tip  for getting those stains out of the carpet too. Once you’ve got a clean white paper towel or cloth, begin blotting up as much of the spilled beer as possible. Then, use two cups of plain warm water mixed with a tablespoon of hand dishwasher liquid and a table spoon of white vinegar to blot the stain away.

We are sure that the above will work, tried and tested but if your carpets have seen too many spills and they need replacing, Contact us to discuss replacing your old carpets for new.

Best Flooring Options for Allergy Sufferers

To help improve your indoor environment and ease allergy symptoms,  we have put together a list of best flooring options for allergy sufferers.

According to the Allergy and Asthma Foundation of America, approximately one out of every five people in the United States suffers from asthma or allergies. Indoor allergy triggers include dust mites and mold, as well as pollen tracked in from outdoors, all of which can affect the air quality inside your home. Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) present in many paints and finishes are another concern of many allergy and asthma sufferers. To help improve your indoor environment and ease allergy symptoms, look for allergy-friendly flooring options, which includes brands which emit lower amounts of VOCs such as Hardwood floor….

Tile

The hard, flat surface of ceramic and porcelain tiles makes them a good choice for those with allergies. Tiles are easy to keep clean because dust mites, pollen and pet hair cannot penetrate their impervious texture. Both ceramic and porcelain tiles are highly water resistant. This makes them a good choice for bathrooms and kitchens, where steam and water may cause mold and mildew. Although ceramic and porcelain are well suited for those with allergies, not every type of tile is a great option. Some tile materials, such as natural stone, may be more porous than others. Dirt and dust may snag in the uneven crevices, making these types of flooring less effective.

Hardwood floor

Hardwood flooring is another great option for allergy sufferers. Solid wood floors have been studied and shown to have minimal contamination from dust, mold, and animal dander, which results in improved indoor air quality. Hardwood works well in a bedroom or living area which is not prone to dampness of water infiltration. Additionally hardwood floors are known for being easy to keep clean – dust and debris can simply be swept or vacuumed away. Hardwood flooring is also a popular choice among home buyers, one that adds value and beauty to any home.

Cork / Bamboo

Like solid hardwood, cork and bamboo are allergy-friendly natural flooring options. Both cork and bamboo grow and regenerate quickly, making them sustainable, eco-friendly choices as well. Bamboo is actually a grass, but is comparable in look and feel to hardwood. Natural cork provides additional noise insulation and more cushion than hardwood, but is also more susceptible to dents or water damage.

Low Pile Carpet

If you love the softness and comfort of carpeting, keep in mind that low pile rugs are preferable to higher pile carpets which easily trap dust and dirt in their longer fibers. Wall to wall carpets should be vacuumed faithfully, cleaned and sanitized according to manufacturer’s instructions. A professional carpet cleaning can help to eliminate allergens by removing dust and dirt embedded in your rugs. Washable areas rugs are another good choice for allergy sufferers, and can be placed over a more allergy friendly flooring choice.

Linoleum

Although linoleum and vinyl may be viewed as interchangeable, they are made of different materials. Both vinyl and linoleum are flat surface materials, but vinyl is basically a versatile, man-made plastic. Linoleum, which is made from linseed oil, is considered a more eco-friendly and allergy-friendly option. The smooth, flat surface makes this flooring type easy to keep clean. Linoleum costs more than vinyl, but for those with allergies, the price difference may be acceptable.

No matter which type of flooring you choose, you must keep it clean and limit indoor allergens.
